Dear GSCS Students, Families and Staff,
Some rumors, flyers and social media posts have been circulating regarding an effort to stage a walkout at one or more of our high school campuses. This is not a safe course of action. While Griffin-Spalding County Schools (GSCS) believes in First Amendment rights and personal expression in a peaceful way, we cannot allow a walkout. Our top priority is the safety and security of our students. If students exit the school building, it will disrupt instructional time, and we will not be able to ensure their safety.
Students who wish to express their views on national issues should do so in a way that does not compromise their safety, impact the instructional day or interrupt school operations. Disruption of school operations is against the student code of conduct and may result in disciplinary consequences. Also, any class time missed will not be excused. We acknowledge the value of civic engagement but recommend emailing or calling your congressman or finding other ways to express your beliefs outside of school hours and off school property. Our high school administrative teams are happy to work with student leaders to help them find safe and responsible ways to express themselves.
Parents, please discuss this matter with your students. Parents, students and staff, thank you for helping us maintain safe learning environments in our schools.
Sincerely,
Dr. Donald Warren
GSCS Superintendent

GSCS continues to work closely with Spalding County EMA to monitor the weather conditions. The latest forecast indicates that ice accumulation is possible in Griffin-Spalding County. Out of an abundance of caution, no staff or students should report to school/work on Monday, January 26. A decision regarding Tuesday will be made on Monday. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Please use caution and stay safe.

GSCS is working closely with Spalding County EMA and weather services to monitor conditions related to a weather system that is expected to bring cold temperatures, precipitation and possible ice to our area over the weekend. We will continue to monitor this situation and will provide any updates regarding school operations for Monday via our parent communication system (phone message, text, e-mail, app), social media outlets and the district website at www.gscs.org. Thank you, stay weather aware and safe.
